OPEN INDUSTRY 4.0 ALLIANCE – SPOTLIGHT: THE DIGITAL TWIN AND THE VINTAGE DRILLING MACHINE

20. Oktober 2020

Members of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance, including Endress+Hauser, Festo, KUKA, Pepperl+Fuchs Group, SAP and Schunk, are also founding members of the "Industrial Digital Twin Association" (IDTA), founded in September this year. As an "implementation alliance", many of these members are already actively working in their customers' factories with the help of digital twins - whose interfaces are now being adapted in the cloud (4th layer "Common Cloud Central") before being made available to members of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance.

In one particluar project, using a vintage drill from 1900, members of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance have demonstrated how their data from the factory floor is incorporated into a digital twin in the cloud.

Konrad Heidrich, Senior netIOT Solution Architect of Hilscher, explains: "On the factory floor within the Open Edge Computing layer - layer 2 - the real assets are already detected today and their master data is collected from as far as possible, automatically. This data is an important building block on the way to a standardized digital twin".

Michael Riester, Senior Enterprise Architect IIoT at Endress+Hauser Group, adds: "The Asset Administration Shell from the Industry 4.0 platform is the central concept for exchanging Digital Twin data. The Digital Twin is so important because it incorporates the entire lifecycle of a machine or other component. That's why we are all working together on the Digital Twin, in Layer 3 of the Open Operator Cloud and Layer 4 of the Common Cloud Central, as part of the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance.”
