Demonstrators at the booth
Software Defined Automation
Software-Defined Automation (SDA)
From hardware-bound to software-driven automation
Industrial automation has long been tied to specific hardware, creating vendor lock-ins, rigid lifecycles, and high costs. The SDA demonstrator shows a different path: automation workloads run containerized on a flexible IT/OT stack – decoupled from dedicated devices and managed via cloud-native tools like Kubernetes.
At SPS 2025, visitors will see how containerized control applications can be deployed, updated, and orchestrated across multi-vendor edge devices – just like modern IT systems. The setup proves that automation can scale, recover, and evolve dynamically, bringing cloud agility to the shop floor.
The OI4 SDA Stack goes one step further: it builds the open infrastructure for continuous integration and deployment of industrial apps using OpenDevStack and margo compliance. This shared foundation marks the transition from isolated proofs of concept to a production-ready, multi-vendor ecosystem.

Flexible. Scalable. Hardware-independent.

Digital Product Passport with AAS / Automated ESPR Compliance
A complete product story – from creation to ownership and change to automated creation of a Digital Product Passport
In this demonstrator, a production of a bicycle takes shape — not just physically, but digitally.
Each component, from frame to saddle, is represented by its own Asset Administration Shell (AAS). Together, they form the foundation for a Digital Product Passport (DPP) that grows automatically as the product evolves.
Visitors can experience how data flows through the entire lifecycle:
Digital Product Passport (DPP): All relevant information — technical data, materials, and sustainability parameters — are stored in the AAS. As the product takes shape, the DPP builds itself automatically.
AAS Transfer of Ownership: When the bicycle is handed over to a new owner, its digital twin moves with it. The AAS, including all relevant submodels, is securely transferred across company boundaries, maintaining data integrity and access control.
AAS Product Change Notification (PCN): If a component changes — for example, a new handlebar design — the update is published automatically via an AAS submodel. Stakeholders are notified instantly, and downstream systems can react without manual effort.
Why it matters
This demonstrator shows how the Asset Administration Shell can connect processes and partners along a product’s lifecycle — from production to use and back. What was once fragmented data becomes a continuous, trusted information flow.
The result: transparent products, seamless handovers, and structured change communication — all built on open standards.

Future Industrial Software Architecture
Integrating Machines
From traditional factory to smart factory – step by step
Many mid-sized manufacturers face the challenge of transforming long-established production environments into smart, connected factories. Legacy structures, aging machinery, and limited resources make it difficult to adopt new digital systems — especially when different generations within the company hold varying views on technology and investment priorities.
The Integrating Machines demonstrator addresses exactly this situation. It shows how existing machines and systems can be connected gradually, using a modular architecture that adapts to each company’s environment. Open interfaces and standardized data exchange formats enable a secure, step-by-step integration of heterogeneous equipment — without replacing everything at once.
Beyond the technology, the project also focuses on people: targeted training and communication help employees understand and actively shape the transformation.
The result is a practical, scalable path to digitalization — empowering traditional factories to evolve at their own pace toward a connected, future-ready Smart Factory.

Smart doesn’t mean starting from scratch.

Digital Calibration Certificate
Making calibration trustworthy, structured, and machine-readable
Calibration certificates today are often issued as PDFs or paper documents — useful for humans, but not for machines. The DCC via AAS demonstrator transforms calibration data into structured, authenticated, and interoperable digital form, enabling seamless exchange across companies and systems.
In our demonstrator, each measurement instrument is represented by an AAS (Asset Administration Shell). The calibration result is stored in a standardized digital calibration certificate submodel. The certificate is signed, versioned, and securely shared — so downstream systems can consume and trust the data automatically.
Key capabilities:
Machine-readable calibration data instead of manual conversion
Secure, signed calibration certificates ensuring data integrity
Automatic integration of calibration results into workflows and quality systems
Cross-company interoperability without custom interfaces
Why it matters
With the DCC demonstrator, we close the gap between measurement and automation. No more manual re-entry of calibration data, no ambiguity in interpretation, and no isolated silos. Metrology, quality, and automation systems all benefit. Manufacturers, calibration labs, and system integrators gain a trusted, scalable path to digital calibration — one that fits into broader industry 4.0 architectures.
