2024 AAS Hackathon in Delft: A Report on Progress in Digital Twin

On May 22, 2024, the Festo Experience Center hosted the 2024 AAS Hackathon in Delft, where approximately 40 experts gathered for a technical breakdown of Asset Administration Shell (AAS) advancements and their role in autonomous operations. The WIB working group “Autonomous Operations” organized the event in cooperation with the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance.

Exploring Digital Twin Challenges

The 2024 AAS Hackathon in Delft addressed the challenges of Digital Twins through two distinct tracks.

  1. Building an AAS and incorporating machine data: Participants delved into the process of constructing an Asset Administration Shell (AAS) and integrating machine data from the ground up. This track emphasized practical approaches to initiating AAS and integrating real-world data into digital frameworks.
  2. Advantages and disadvantages of AAS in a diverse ecosystem: This track explored the broader implications of AAS within an extensive ecosystem, examining the challenges and benefits of adopting AAS technology. Discussions focused on understanding the potential of AAS to streamline operations and enhance collaboration across different sectors.

Key Takeaways from the 2024 AAS Hackathon in Delft

During the 2024 AAS Hackathon in Delft, it became evident that AAS is increasingly important in the industry. Collaboration is needed to help people understand and adopt AAS concepts and their benefits. Developing sub models quickly is crucial for successful AAS implementation. The speed of this development directly affects how well AAS can be used in different situations and the amount of benefits it can bring. There is a high demand for eventing and operational capabilities in AAS to make it work well in different scenarios.

While the AAS implementation is growing, indicating a positive trend towards widespread adoption, it is still in a delicate phase. This highlights the urgent need for joint efforts to raise awareness and understanding of AAS concepts. The mantra “better together” resonates strongly, emphasizing that collaboration is essential for the continued growth and acceptance of AAS technology.
