OPEN EDGE
COMPUTING (OEC)

OEC in a
nutshell

The Open Edge Computing Workgroup focuses on defining and implementing standards-based requirements for an Open Edge Computing platform within the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance, ensuring interoperability between edge devices, applications, and other layers in the alliance’s Architectural Guardrails, while integrating security and facilitating cross-layer communication.

Purpose

The Open Edge Computing Workgroup is focused on establishing the standards and requirements necessary for effective edge computing. As the industrial landscape becomes more data-driven, edge computing plays a critical role in processing data close to its source, reducing latency, and improving real-time decision-making. The OEC Workgroup ensures that edge devices and applications can operate seamlessly within a multi-vendor environment, enabling efficient data processing and communication at the edge of the network. This Workgroup is essential for integrating diverse technologies and ensuring that edge computing solutions contribute effectively to the broader ecosystem.

Scope

The OEC Workgroup’s scope includes defining the specific requirements that edge devices and applications must meet to be aligned with the Open Industry 4.0 framework. This involves establishing a comprehensive guideline to facilitate the deployment of interoperable solutions on the edge, ensuring that these solutions can communicate effectively across different vendors and platforms. The Workgroup also addresses the integration of edge computing with other layers of the ecosystem, focusing on key areas such as security, data acquisition, and communication.

Dependencies

Collaboration with other Workgroups, such as the Digital Twin and Industrial Cyber Security, is critical for the OEC Workgroup. This cooperation ensures that edge computing solutions are not only secure and interoperable but also aligned with the overall OI4 Alliance’s Architectural Guardrails. Additionally, the Workgroup engages with vendors to ensure that their edge solutions meet the required standards and can be effectively integrated into the ecosystem.

Deliverables

Deliverables from the OEC Workgroup include a detailed guideline for deploying Open Industry 4.0‑aligned edge computing solutions, specifications for microservices communication, and requirements for edge devices and hosts. These outputs support the development and deployment of effective edge computing solutions, enhancing its overall efficiency and functionality.
