The Challenge
We’re Tackling
Interoperable digital twins based on the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) are technologically well advanced, but their economic value remains difficult for many companies to assess. The discussion is still strongly technology-driven, while solid business cases and standardized evaluation models are still lacking.
What we’ve
done so far
- Built a library that brings together the economic potential of the AAS and makes it easier to assess
- Applied the approach to two concrete use cases, defining relevant metrics and calculating their economic value

Why this project
matters and for who
This project matters because it makes the economic value of interoperable Digital Twins measurable, giving companies a solid basis for investment decisions and AAS experts the arguments to drive adoption.
The project is of central importance, as it enables transparent tracking of energy consumption per workpiece and thereby supports targeted optimizations within the production process. In light of rising energy costs and increasing sustainability requirements, the project establishes the foundation for calculating the CO₂ footprint and complying with future regulatory demands.
It enhances competitiveness by making sustainable production data visible to customers and by factoring energy usage into pricing strategies. The project is relevant for management, production, IT, and sales — as well as for customers who increasingly value transparent and environmentally responsible supply chains.
